Fort Tours - Situated at a distance of about 18 km from Panjim, the Aguada Fort is not a colossal fort but is nonetheless a major place of tourist interest. The credit for the construction of the Aguada Fort goes to the Portuguese who built it in the first half of the seventeenth century near River Mandovi.
Aguada is a Portuguese word which when translated means “Water”. Aguada Fort has a spring within it that used to provide water supply to the ships that arrived in Goa after a long voyage from Lisbon. The fort as it stands now houses the central jail and a lighthouse built in the nineteenth century. The construction of the Aguada Fort was prompted by the necessity of shielding Goa against the Dutch and the Maratha invasion from the sea. The Aguada Fort bears ample testimony to the grandeur of Portuguese power in Goa. At the base of the Aguada Fort are the gorgeous beaches of Sinquerem and Candolim.
You can access the Aguada Fort from Panajim or Mapusa in a taxi, bus or a motorcycle.
