The shortest route from Ooty to Bangalore is North-East bound on NH 209 which covers a distance of 235 Kms.
There are two Major routes from Bangalore to Ooty.
The most travelled is Bangalore to Mysore on the Mysore Road, and onward to Ooty via Nanjangud, Gundlupet, Bandipur,
Mudumalai, Gudalur and Naduvattam. This is also a very popular route because it passes through forest reserves, tea plantations and the ghat section. The journey time can be between 7 to 9 hours depending on the state of the roads, which are narrow at places and tend to be in a bad shape often.
An interesting deviation is to turn left immediately after passing the Mudumalai bus stop towards Masinagudi and onward to Ooty through a steep climb and a series of hairpin bends. This is shorter, less travelled and more beautiful in terms of the views.
The ideal thing to do would be to take the original route for the onward journey and then return via Masinagudi.
The other major route which is a lot longer passes from Bangalore to Hosur, Coimbatore (or Avnashi), Mettupalyam, Ooty. This route is preferred when the roads are horrible/under repair on the Mysore - Ooty sector. This route also cuts down the drive through ghat section to some extent.
