Bird Sanctuaries in Andhra Pradesh - In November 1999, Kolleru Lake was declared a wildlife sanctuary under the India's Wildlife Protection Act, and selected a wetland of international importance in the year 2002 in November under the international Ramsar Convention. Now this lake is famous as Kolleru Lake Bird Sanctuary.
Kolleru Lake is a big freshwater lake in Andhra Pradesh which is a southern Indian state of India. This lake is situated between the deltas of the Krishna and Godavari rivers, in Krishna and West Godavari districts. This lake plays an important role in the ecological system. It is a natural reservoir that controls flood for two rivers. This lake is connected to the Krishna and Godavari systems by 30 inflowing drains and channels. In fact the two seasonal rivers like Budameru and Tammileru give water to this lake directly. Not only this, Kolleru Lake is also an important habitat for over 50,000 resident and migratory birds, including the Grey or Spot-billed Pelican. Extending over 673 km² of area, Kolleru Lake which is now more famous as Kolleru Lake Bird Sanctuary abounds in various flora and fauna.
