This park was declared as a sanctuary in July 1978 with the motive of conserving the mangrove vegetation.
Coringa Wildlife Sanctuary features thirty five species of Mangrove plant that belong to 24 families.
Mangroves are extremely tolerant to saline water and occur in the tropical and sub tropical estuary regions.
In this sanctuary the mangrove plants display curious adaptations such as stilt roots as in Rhizophora.
Besides the trees, shrubs and herbs the sanctuary is also home to a variety of grasses like Dalbagia spinosa, Derris trifoliate, Acanthus ilicifolius, Clerodendrum inerme, Suaeda maritima, Suaeda monoica, Porteresia coarctata, Myriostachya wightiana.
At the Coringa Wild Life Sanctuary, the mangroves provide shelter to a wide variety of animal population. They are also the safe refuge for the birds, mammals and insects.
The soil surface of the mangroves is the favorite haunt of the mudskippers, crabs and mollusks.
