Wildlife Sanctuary in South India - Located about 20 kms from Kakinada and 70 kms from Rajahmundy, the Coringa Wild Life Sanctuary spreads across an area of 235 square kilometers. The Coringa Wild Life Sanctuary is most famous for the reptiles it houses, the renowned ones being the salt-water crocodiles. The sanctuary is a part of the Godavari Mangroves and what makes it more unique is the fact that it is located on the back waters of the sea. This park was declared as a sanctuary in July 1978 with the motive of conserving the mangrove vegetation.
Andhra Pradesh’s Coringa Wild Life Sanctuary features thirty five species of Mangrove plant that belong to 24 families. Mangroves are extremely tolerant to saline water and occur in the tropical and sub tropical estuary regions. In this sanctuary the mangrove plants display curious adaptations such as stilt roots as in Rhizophora. Besides the trees, shrubs and herbs the sanctuary is also home to a variety of grasses like Dalbagia spinosa, Derris trifoliate, Acanthus ilicifolius, Clerodendrum inerme, Suaeda maritima, Suaeda monoica, Porteresia coarctata, Myriostachya wightiana. At the Coringa Wild Life Sanctuary, the mangroves provide shelter to a wide variety of animal population. They are also the safe refuge for the birds, mammals and insects. The soil surface of the mangroves is the favorite haunt of the mudskippers, crabs and mollusks.
You will find fishing cats, estuarine crocodiles, sea turtles in plenty in the Coringa Wild Life Sanctuary. Otter, the protected species also finds shelter in this sanctuary. The commonly spotted birds include Snipes, Ducks, Sea Gulls and Flamingos. Other species of feathery friends include Crested Serpent Eagle, Scarlet Minivet, Indian Roller, Black Capped Kingfisher, Oriental Dwarf Kingfisher and White bellied Woodpecker. It is expected that the bird lovers will have a gala time in Coringa Wildlife Sanctuary.
October to May is the best time to visit the Coringa Wild Life Sanctuary. There is a Forest Rest House in Coringa where you can stay put on your visit to the Sanctuary.
