Andhra Pradesh Veerbhadraswami Temple at Lepakshi
is located near Ananatapur district
in Andhra Pradesh . The sanctum sanctorum
has the idol of Lord Veerabhadra and
the temple provides vivid example of Vijayanagar
architecture and art .Located on a low rocky
cliff which is locally known as Kurmasaila ,
South India Veerbhadraswami Temples appears like
a tortoise. It is said to be built by two brothers Viranna
and Virupanna in 16 th Century.
The temple sanctum is between two asymmetrical enclosures
and you enter here through a large hall. You get to
see some of the amazing paintings and sculptures here
and no empty space is found here without any of the
art on it . You see another unique thing at South India Veerbhadraswami Temples , a suspended pillar in the main hall,
which earlier didn't touch ground, and it was believed
that a cloth can be passed through it. People kneel
down here. The frescos on the ceilings depict the life
of the patrons of the temple as well as of the epics
Ramayana and Mahabharata. You will be spellbound with
the paintings here .
The idol of Lord Veerabhadra is seen
carrying weapons and paining on the ceiling depict Virupanna
worshipping the lord . Most amazing is the boulder carved
multi hooded Naga protecting a granite Shiva Linga outside
the complex of the temple. You will be greeted by giant
size granite Nandi or the sacred bull always associated
with Lord Shiva. Lepakhsi is situated
