night of Siva is celebrated to mark the birth of Lord
Siva .According to mythology Lord Siva was born in the
form of a lingam on the night of Krishna Chaturdasi
(14th day of the dark fortnight). The
people of Andhra Pradesh on this day after place a lingam
in the mandapam . The Shiva
Lingam is worshipped with bel leaves
. In the evening the devotees take bath &
go to the Shiva temple & chant slokas dedicated
to Lord Shiva . The custom is to keep
awake all night listening to stories of the lord and
chanting mantras.
In Srikalahasti in Andhra Pradesh , this festival is
celebrated with traditional fervor. Idol of the lord
is taken on procession on Indra Vahanam Lingodhbhavam
is the most important event which is performed
in the early hours. Devotees also throng the temple
of Bhakta Kannappa a tribal devotee,who
was blessed by the lord and was granted salvation. Bharadwaja
Theertham a tank which is well known for its
scenic beauty is also visited on this Mahasivarathri
day. The Thapo Vinayaka idol
situated in the middle of the tank is a major tourist
attraction.
