The jail at Viper, where prisoners deported from the mainland were restricted, was built by the British under the supervision of Major Fort. Work on the prison was started in 1867.
Gallows built on top of a hillock, noticeable to all prisoners in the island, signified death and once this island was taken to be a permanent prison for local and mainland convicts. The jail was deserted after commissioning of the cellular jail. It is also known as ‘Viper Island' because of the presence of viper snakes in the past.
